Floorgeneral Daon Merritt
Daon Merritt leads the way

Daon Merritt, the rookie point guard..

.. from South Alabama, who arrived in the Slovak Republic last month, had 16 points and 6 assists to lead Banska Bystrica to a 89-52 major upset win over first place Prievidza on the road this weekend. Banska Bystrica’s stunning win knocked Prievidza out of sole possession of first place, putting them now into a 3-way tie for the league lead. The win put Banska Bystrica into sole possession of 2nd place (making them the #4 team in Slovakia). A two-time All-Sun Belt Conference honoree, Merritt is a 5’9 (1.76m), 193-pound (88 kg) true point guard, who has been successful on all levels (e.g.: high school, AAU, NCAA). He’s a handful; he’s well known in New York City as a strong penetrator (often referred to favorably as a human bowling ball) with a strong desire to win. Bystrica’s victory was a balanced effort as Merritt got all his teammates involved with six players scoring in double-figures, from 11-to-17 points, respectively. Merritt, with his strong penetration skills, made the first place Prievidza pay at the free throw line, with Daon knocking down 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Merritt was also 2 of 5 for 2FG, while making 1 of 3 from behind the 3-point arc. Merritt is averaging 12 points and 4.5 assists in 33.5 minutes per game. And, he’s the only American on the team (the first ever for the franchise), while usually competing against two Americans.
