| From Las Vegas to Australia
The Cinderella story of the 2011/2012 season may..
..very well be that of Kevin Gaines. This guard was a High School All American and a USA Basketball Junior Team member who also once played at the Hoop Summit before enrolling at NCAA powerhouse Michigan. At Michigan he had an immediate impact while averaging 11.7 ppg and 3.8 aspg as a Freshman. Gaines later transferred to Houston where he graduated in 2002. Then, his career took the wrong turn. Gaines was not drafted and did not sign a lucrative contract overseas. Instead, he lived the life of a civilian, having a normal 9 to 5 job. Until the summer of 2011 when he participated in the Euro Challenge Camp in Las Vegas, and impressed everybody with his skills. Among the many international coaches, agents and scouts at that event there were also some people from Australia who spotted Gaines and spread the word once they got back “down under”. In the end, it resulted in a contract between Gaines and the Yaralla Port City. Gaines is expected in Australia in a few weeks and his first game in the QBL will be at the beginning of May.
