| Reginald Delk: NBA Workout
University of Louisville’s Reginald Delk, considered..
.. one of the best 3-point shooting threats in college basketball, will be flying to Phoenix today to workout in front of head coach Alvin Gentry and the Phoenix Suns (the NBA Draft is this coming Thursday, June 24). Delk joined his twin brother, Richard Delk (Troy University) recently, in making it a family affair, with the twins both selecting Court Side for exclusive representation. Reginald is one of the few players to start for two high-major powerhouses, in his collegiate career. Highly touted as prep players (the Delk twins were nationally recruited and both considered Top 100 recruits), the twins, natives of Jackson, Tennessee, initially decided to attend Mississippi State of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). In his first two seasons at Starkville, Mississippi campus, Reginald started 59 of the 65 games. His high game in the SEC was a 27-point outburst as a freshman against Arkansas. While both Delk twins had success at Mississippi State, they both felt the need to change their environment after their sophomore seasons. This time, the twins decided to attend different schools. For Reginald Delk, this was an opportunity to play for one of the legendary coaches in basketball, Rick Pitino. As he sat out the 2007-08 season which is mandatory for transfers, Delk thought he get the starting 2-guard job filled by rising Louisville star Terrence Williams, once he became eligible in 2008. However, Williams, who was expected to an early entrant for the 2008 NBA Draft, decided to stay in school for another year.
Delk got his chance to start this season for Louisville, but he had to share playing time on a very talented, balanced squad, averaging only 21 minutes per game, averaging 6.4 points while shooting at a 42% clip from 3. Reginald did have several big performances this season for Louisville, including a 20-point game again versus Arkansas. Delk actually averaged more in his first two seasons of college ball at Mississippi State, 8.9 ppg and 9.5 ppg, respectively, in his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Both Delk twins are expected to showcase their games at Court Side’s annual Pro Camp, on the UNLV campus (Las Vegas, Nevada) next month (July 12-13).
