Gmunden celebrates Cup Win!
Mayes powers Gmunden to Austrian Cup Title, named MVP of Austria Cup Final 4

De'Teri Mayes made 11 of his 20 shots from the field (including 5 of 9 from behind the 3-point arc) and tallied a game-high 31 points to lead Gmunden to the championship of the 2010 Austrian Cup, a 77-68 win over Kapfenberg. For his efforts, Mayes was honored as the Most Valuable Player in the Austria Cup Final Four, for the third time in his storied career. Gmunden jumped out to an early 42-28 lead after two quarters, only to see Kapfenberg, who was led by the double-double effort of rookie power forward Mike Schachtner (15 points, 10 rebounds), make a run to start the second half to close their deficit to within one at the end of 3 quarters (57-56). But Gmunden, which is currently in second-place in the Austria Bundesliga, persevered and held on to win the Cup with Mayes making some key free throws to seal the title. Gmunden got to Sunday’s final by defeating Arkadia Traiskirchen in their Final Four match on Saturday, 68-58 with Mayes leading the way with 23 points in 28 minutes. Kapfenberg, currently in 5th place in the Bundesliga, won their Saturday semi by defeating host Oberwart, 79-69 Mayes is, undoubtedly, one of the all-time greatest players ever in Austria Bundesliga history, has been recognized as the league’s most outstanding player in 2003, 2004 and 2006. The former Murray State star has spent his entire professional career in Gmunden (his rookie campaign was 1999-2000). Mayes, the 6’3 shooting guard, has showed that he is still in his prime this season (at age 35), his 20.1 points per game makes him the current leading scorer in Austria. Mayes, who shoots the 3 (38.8%) to go along with his strong mid-range game, is hoping to lead Gmunden to their 4th Austria Bundesliga championship in the De’Teri Mayes era this season.
